First impressions on NRF 2012: that was a busy show! Hopefully the traffic and interest translates to good things for retailers in 2012 and beyond. The show was a tremendous success for the Wavelink team, as we were constantly busy showing voice-enabled applications with Speakeasy, smart device management with Avalanche, and the introduction of Velocity, which we believe will usher in the next generation of mobile web applications. In addition to the interest in our products, it was GREAT to see the sea of blue Wavelink scarves roaming the aisles! We even got Miss America in one (picture below)!

Ok, by now we’ve all seen the news of Google’s acquisition of Motorola, and by now there have probably been several write-ups, blurbs, and so forth. The deal certainly made for an interesting Monday morning, but as others have pointed out, one of the more interesting aspects of the deal is the patents Google gains with the purchase. As Silicon Valley Mercury News reported,
The deal also gives Google access to more than 17,000 patents held by Motorola, a pioneering cellphone maker that became an early partner using Google’s Android mobile operating system in 2008. Analysts said those patents could help Google stave off a barrage of claims levied by rivals battling the company’s Android mobile operating system.
[Google CEO Larry Page] acknowledged this strategy, saying in a blog post: “Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anticompetitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.”
Wow.
On the enterprise mobility front, Motorola Mobility’s sister, Motorola Solutions, will remain a separate company. It will be interesting to see what Google does with the Mobility side once the acquisition is complete and how/if it changes the competitive landscape of the ever-growing smartphone/tablet world.

Greetings! A couple of items for today’s post. The first is an article that I came across at the end of last week which caught my attention. We’re big on the benefits of remotely diagnosing and remedying problems, hence our remote control product. So naturally, when I saw that Chevrolet will soon allow owners/drivers to remotely set/check on current settings and statuses of their Chevy Volt automobiles, I was intrigued. Give it a read and tell us what else is on the horizon for remote control type applications, and where you’d like to see them evolve?

One of the better blogs/forums for mobility news is the Enterprise Mobility Forum. Much of the time the topics are focused on consumer side discussions, but I always find the topics relative, well-developed, and insightful. I recently came across this article which discusses the new Motorola ES400 and what it means to the enterprise mobility landscape.
The idea is that there is a growing demand for devices that, as the author describes, “marry the best features of a smartphone such as a sleek form factors and an intuitive UI with the durability of a rugged device.” We’ve blogged about this in various extents before (here and here) and I couldn’t agree more… while the need for traditional ruggedized computers will always remain, there is huge potential to extend the benefits of ruggedized computers to new markets and industries. I’m sure over the next few years we’ll see more and more devices like the Motorola ES400, and I’m interested to see what the future holds as the mobile device industry evolves.

This article from InformationWeek should make all of our device manufacturer friends out there happy. David Krebs, one of the most respected voices in the industry, with VDC Research is projecting solid growth in ruggedized handheld computers across the globe, and especially in Europe.
One of the items in the piece of particular interest is the expected increase in “beyond the fence” devices. As Mr. Krebs points out, “The real growth driver for rugged handheld devices continues to be with the ‘beyond the fence’ field mobile workers, which is the least-penetrated market segment and is only now beginning to see the benefits of making certain processes mobile.”
